This week we finished blocking our 5 minute Othello scene and so we took some advice from Mr Brown and did an exercise that involved throwing all of our blocking out the window and improvising the scene; to see if we got any fresh ideas. At first it was hard to not go where we had practised and we found it hard to take each other seriously, but as soon as we focussed we started to find things that afterwards we agreed, looked better than before. For example when Desdemona wakes up, Othello is usually downstage right staring out to the audience however during our improvisations we were making our scene very melodramatic and had Othello sit on the end of Desdemona's bed, and as he speaks to her she is trying to seduce him. This has added a lot more sexual tension to our scene; something that we played with when we were mucking around with ideas, however our scene was so much more intense and suggestive with it that we decided to use it instead of our previously blocked positions.
