Today we had our first taste of Artaud in a workshop that proved very emotional and uncomfortable. I was, at first very sceptical as to how a soundscape could possibly inspire feel feelings of uncomfortableness and awkwardness however as soon as we began our soundscape based around the idea of despair, and someone screeched their foot slowly across the floor, I actually gasped and become overwhelmed with a growing feeling of weirdness. It was very hard to describe and very horrible to listen to and from the first noise in the soundscape I could feel the whole class’s stomachs drop with nervousness and unusual feelings about the noise. The tableau we formed with actions also made me feel queasy and my favourite tableaus were ones that were simple yet powerful. I found one groups very intriguing as they stood in a circle and shout words at one person in the centre. These feelings of hatred were passed from the actors to us, the audience and we silently willed them to stop. Overall this workshop taught me the power of sounds which can spark memories and waves of emotions which I believe happened to us all today in a very surreal experience that I will never forget.
