Today was the first time we got up and began to block the scene. I suddenly struck me how hard it is going to be working naturalistically within such a large group. When I was working intimately with just Anna I found that it was easier to be truthful and not at all melodramatic however as I am in a large group there is a tendency to exaggerate the conversation in order to poke fun at it and improvise humour rather than realism (which is easier to do – that is why there is a process for Stanislavski’s work, you don’t just get up and improvise it!) When we were working today we focussed especially on the Beforetime, given circumstances and super task/object for our characters. This process has made it so much easier to understand the scene and its context.
